Legend has it that an old time Adirondack Guide had to carry
a wealthy lady named Matilda on his shoulders so that she did not
get her feet wet. Hence, the name hitch up matildas have been
give to these cantilevered cliff bridges allowing people to hike without
getting their feet wet.
